"I don't think I have what it takes to make a good action game. I think I am better at telling a story."

-Hironobu Sakaguchi

I think it's an interesting statement in lieu of the fact that he also said IX was his favorite and closest to his intentions all along for Final Fantasy (although V was his favorite of the games he was a lead designer on.) The first one is like this interpretation of pencil and paper role playing games with influences from previous PC RPG video games and Dragon Quest. It really has its own thing going on like how spells reset on the basis of days.

It's understandable but interesting how you prefer I to IX because there's less waiting in battles, because going back to I on NES I get taken aback by how long battles chug on for. Of course, IX is no better and has even less of an excuse because it could have been faster, and instead you're just waiting for 3D environments, cinematic camera angles and animations to play out taking their own sweet time. IX is particularly slow even in comparison to VII and VIII and I don't think that the developers even processed that people might mind at the time because being cutting edge was the most important thing.

That also makes the fact that you like XIII particularly funny, I guess because that game is so brazenly a "passively spectate as pretty things happen on the screen" game that there's no pretense of interaction anyway. Not that the game does not have strategy or gameplay, but only at advanced levels and only if you seek it out. I guess what I'm trying to say is that there's no pretense, so your mind doesn't have to go back and forth between feeling participating and waiting for things to chug on, so you can relax and enjoy the show. It does also help that the graphics are as far along as they are because everything flows more smoothly in the game as a consequence and the fully realized proportional anime art style is the least likely to offend anyone's tastes as a consequence.
