It's what Neil Postman said television would cause. He was right about what the result would be, but wrong about what technology would lead to behaviour like this. I think the only way you could turn it around would be to have a technology that has breaks applied to it. I've been thinking about how BBSs and Usenet had software that would pull down new messages while posting posts you made, meaning that the constant back-and-forth was nipped in the bud as there was a wall up between each interaction.
