I like using savestates and fastforwarding for old RPGs, just to save time or stop playing when I have to do something else. Some older games can be quite grind heavy, so it's nice to be able to mitigate some of the tedium. I would never savestate battles or decisions, because that takes away the whole challenge. Funnily enough, the last few retro RPGs I finished, I didn't even use savestates or fastforward.

For action games, it completely destroys the fun. Without risk, there can be no stakes. It just neuters any incentive to engage with the game mechanics or level design, and just shit your way through things.

One exception is when I'm trying to practice for a 1cc, since savestates can help you learn difficult parts much faster. I'd consider them extremely useful tools if you are into doing things like 1 life challenges or high scoring. Being able to drill sections and develop strategies quickly can be a great boon. Of course, using these tools in an actual run would ruin the entire point, which is challenging yourself to execute when it counts.
