I never was into RPGs when I was a kid, shit I didn't even know they existed until very late on the 5th gen so I wanted to try some of them and started the first Breath of Fire on the Switch and I already hate the random encounters out of the ass. I know most of JRPGs of the SNES/Genesis era are like that but want you anons to recommend me some of the ones that don't pull that shit besides of Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana.

1 was simple but had a good sense of momentum and moving you from place to place. I don't know why you'd think it was boring. But I also don't have a stunted attention span or imagination.

Also 2 is literally broken.

I find 1 to be delightfully quaint if a bit simple. But It's simplicity is were it also shines, I think. You always have a good sense of were you are and what's happening and what's at stake. It's all forward moment. Keep moving on, finding keys, searching for your sister and meeting new people. It moves between set piece to piece. And the Dark Dragons war of conquest is everyone's problem so there's motivation to go around, if a bit under developed.

2 tends to waffle a bit more. A lot more. The main over arching story doesn't show up till much later in the game and you're basically left with vague errands. There's a neat hook at the start but they sit on that for a while. There's KIND of better character development but only slightly and it's really just the cast taking turns being briefly important. I feel like there's also trouble with context. It doesn't have that flow 1 did so the only reason you're moving forward is because it's the way to go and compared to 1 if you stop to look back there's not really a lot to show for your results. You just keep moving till you run into an obstacle that can only be passed by a certain characters ability you're only gonna use twice and then you remember you haven't been leveling up that fucking monkey and highfort can go to hell.

I find myself really liking BOF1 these days. It has a much brisker pace than it's immediate sequel and while it's dry on character it moves from event to event much faster, while 2 really waffles about.

Also fuck the 2 retranslation pace. It's got somewhat better grammar but is frankly written very poorly.

I do miss when it was just an excuse to have something different and sort of magical. I think Japan probably knew what they where doing but I think people on both sides really just make to big a deal about it.

I miss when games just had magical animal people and nobody really made a stink about it either way

1's a really bare bones game, but in a way I think that's actually helped it age somewhat better than the immediate sequel. It's just straight and to the point and has some neat events till you get to the end. I actually still think it's a fun game you can use to kill a weekend or two. But Im weird.

2's probably a better game because it reached higher, but to be honest it's kind of jank and more than a little busted. It also has easily the worst translation in the series and while there is a fan retranslation, I don't think it's written very well. There's a lot more meandering and it just feels a bit like a chore at times.
