I have the famicom version, the NES version is one of the hardest games in it's library but Japanese version is even worse. It nearly unplayable, they are NO fucking continues so you have 3 lives for whole game, also there are a lot more monsters which are more aggressive. I don't know if anyone back then in Japan actually finished this game.
Also comparing anything to Dark Souls is retarded. Dark Souls series is pretty easy when you learn the game.
