Me again with update. After two false starts(read:game overs in the clocktower of all places), I finally got my act together. Grabbed Grant, took the top route, passed on Syphia or whatever her name was. Smashed my way through the pirate ship with record ease. Now at the outside of Castlevania with five lives in reserve. I stabbed just as I appeared, and got a heart out of it. Go figure. Using 3x for size, and an NTSC S-Video filter in PuNES, since without a filter things just don't look right.
