Most games used more buttons, but they were relegated to the keyboard.
Old joysticks had suction cups underneath and could be mounted on a desk. With that and the keyboard you had makeshift arcade style controls.
At least this is how I and all the amiga users I knew played back in the day.
(pic is just a cheap recreation, since I don't have real amiga hardware anymore)
