Resident Evil 2. This game made me realize that I really don't like the survival horror genre.

Again, N64 nostalgia goggles. It does feel like a lot of care went into this one though, with the little extras like item randomizer

At the end of the day, I couldn't imagine the N64 any other way.

People will always shit on it here for its library of games, the cartridge format, and its controller. But I don't think one can really deny that it has plenty of great exclusive third-party titles, enough to have justified getting one back then or now. It just doesn't cover as many genres, but it has distinct experiences you can't have on the Playstation 1, either.

At the time I thought the N64 was more powerful than the PS1 because it featured filtered textures and its 3D capabilities seemed more fine-tuned and built in from the ground up, but later I've realized just how many more options the CD format gave developers due to data storage and how the hardware could read and process that data, beyond merely how many FMV cutscenes the games would have. (the N64 actually did have games with FMV cutscenes, most notably the impressive port of Resident Evil 2.)

I actually read that the entire console of the Nintendo 64 was built around Super Mario 64. The cartridge format, the controller, everything. I bet Miyamoto took one look at CDs and said, "people don't want to wait for Mario." And the controller is clearly designed specifically for the game too: the 4 face "C" buttons correspond to the direction of the camera, the Z trigger to make Mario duck, the D-Pad is like an after-thought...I still will always defend the controller but it's clear they would have probably been more practical by having a second analog stick, more shoulder buttons or face buttons not tiny, yellow, and relegated off to the side if they weren't just thinking of Super Mario 64 when they made it.

Even The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time is clearly made on a modified engine for Super Mario 64. Nintendo was very much in one frame of reference, focused in one direction, when they made the N64.

>is emulation better?
It will only be considered acceptable once pic related can be emulated without problems.
