Trying to play vanillla gen 1 and gen 2 feels too tedious to really be enjoyable I feel.
>pokemon have awful learnsets, you have to rely entirely on TMs to have pokemon have a remotely decent move set and you only get one of each
>areas often have low diversity of pokemon with most areas having the same old ratattas and pidgies
>trainers have badly designed teams (in GSC there is a trainer who uses a level 2 Voltorb, they found near the THIRD gym)
>adding late game pokemon, typically the cooler stuff, is difficult as the level curves are terrible meaning that you'll have to grind like a mother fucker
Fortunately hacks fix a lot of this shit. Recently I've been playing Crystal Clear, a romhakc that makes gen 2 open world and the game adjust the gym leaders and trainers to how many badges you have, and it's been a lot of fun.
