>It's pure jank
>controls that can be tough as you're first picking them up
>it gets quite a bit better when you read the manual
>exploring as Spider-Man gets fun in no time
all of this also applies to return of the sinister six too by the way

We all have that one special video game in our memory, you know the one, that one which pretty much everyone seems to dislike, with the general consensus being that it is subpar and not even close to being good, and yet... you like it, regardless if it's because you grew up with it and have fond memories of it, or if you picked it up in recent years and actually liked it for real. I have several of these to be honest, though that's probably because I grew up with some shovelware, and because I always try to beat a video game once I pick it up, regardless if I find it good or not, and anything can become enjoyable once you're used to it and get good at it.

I thought it'd be fun to make a thread dedicated to all of these video games that aren't gems, but are instead regular or even ugly rocks... but they're our rocks, and we see the beauty in them even if it isn't obvious to everyone else, it'll be fun to list them and even talk a little about them in depth if you prefer. Out of the top of my head I can think of several subpar adventures that I quite enjoyed, like Ariel: The Little Mermaid (MD), Donald Duck: Goin' Quackers (PS), Sonic 3D Blast (MD), The Lion King: Simba's Mighty Adventure (PS), Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters (GB)... I could go on and on for quite some time, I've spent so many hours playing all of these.

However, the one that probably sticks out to me the most is Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six. I had it on my PolyStation, a Famiclone, and always got stuck on the 2nd and 3rd stages, but kept replaying and loving it... it took me by surprise that it was seen as awful by most, I recall watching the AVGN Spider-Man episode and being somewhat puzzled, though I still found that bit funny. I always hear about how it controls badly, but honestly, while the controls aren't the best, you get used to them in a couple of minutes, they're not hard to figure out, and once you do, you can start to appreciate the level design, especially in the 2nd and 3rd levels.

I know that Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six for NES doesn't have the best reputation, but I personally love it and recommend it, it's only a 15min long playthrough anyways, if you're used to playing and know what you're doing that is. A lot of times it feels like something generic with Spider-Man sprites, but at other times it tries a little bit harder and for me it mostly succeeds, there's also some good level design here, especially in the Sandman and Mysterio levels, good stuff.

Spider-Man: The Return Of The Sinister Six (NES)

I had this as a kid for my NES clone console, and loved it, however I could never get past the 3rd level, always making it up to the boss at best, which means that I only ever experienced half of the adventure, and it always bummed me out. I've decided to give it another shot as an adult, and I get stuck on the same part. I still love it, the level design and atmosphere are still good, but now I can see that the controls overall are mediocre, and having a single life and a single continue just feels cheap.

I'm using an emulator, so there's a part of me that's genuinely considering just using save states at this point, because I find the gameplay to be mediocre anyways, and I just want to experience all of the levels that I didn't get to experience as a kid, without having to worry about being sent back to the start all of the time. I know that saving like this takes away the legitimacy of the run, but I'm caring less and less about this, I love it and I'm nostalgic for it, but I feel like this could take too long otherwise.

I know this won't make much sense, especially as this is a 15 minute run if you know what you're doing, but I've been playing this since I was a kid. I had an NES clone console, and a cartridge with this on it, and never got past the 3rd level, I recall making it to the boss fight, Mysterio, but always losing. Nowadays I've tried to pick it up again, for old times sake, and I can't even get to Mysterio. I feel that the one thing that makes it difficult is the short lengh, as it forced the developers to extend it artificially, and how did they do it? Simple, you have a single life, with a single continue, literally only a couple of attempts.
