Starglider II on the Atari ST is one of my favorite games of all time and was a huge influence on me. Had planet surfaces you could fly around full of weird ships and creatures and objects, tunnel systems to explore, you could fly right off the planet into space and zoom around the solar system in stardrive mode, fight space pirates and steal cargo to trade, skim the upper atmosphere of gas giants and witness flying mechanical space whales.. its designer Jez San later went on to help work on designing the Super FX chip for Nintendo that made Star Fox possible. He was awarded a knighthood and now he makes shitty cryptocurrency gambling games. Guess you gotta make a living somehow.
