Metroidvania is actually fine term to describe exploration platformers with RPG-like progression

Thing is it often applies to exploration platforemers without RPG progression.


Actually triggering:
When developers say Retro FPS formula, but they mean 'Lock you in a room with enemies" Painkiller/Serious Sam formula, like nuDoom did.

Actual RetroFPS formula is more akin to Metroid-like exploration - you enter a level and have one area available to you, then through keys and switches new areas become available to you, they are often interconnected and sometimes located withing already completed areas that become repopulated with new things (Doom, Quake, Duke 3D almost never locked you in, and almost always followed the above formula).

Also picrelated - when people claim that something resembling Wolf is Doom-like (wolf is much more primitive in all apsects)
