Oh yeah, I'm just chuckling because of the "IT'S JAPANIMATION IT AIN'T THAT KIDDY CRAP IT'S FOR MATURE VIEWERS" marketing being sort of "oh was that thing?" from how we've come from it.

Heck, the "all anime is adult videos" thing in video stores wasn't helped by the very early market treating tentacle porn as normal as any other anime release so for a small while you had a blurry line where it was all the same.

It wasn't, but the market then didn't support a western release of fanservice moecrap. Ultra violent OVAs and moveis crashed in after Akira made some success, so the focus on advertising would go to things that resembled Ninja Scroll or Angel Cop or the like.
