Basically, Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night define the genre. Simon's Quest (CV2) introduced the non-linear platforming and rpg mechanics to that series only a year after the original Metroid. So it's not like SotN suddenly decided to rip off Metroid with no history at all.

The term "clone" is generally not appropriate as a genre definition. Clone usually defines a narrow subgenre at best. A "WoW Clone" is an MMORPG that specifically imitates World of Warcraft. Symphony of the Night is not a Metroid clone.

>non-linear dungeon platformers
These are accurate, just mouthfuls. Terms like that only catch on if something more convenient doesn't stick first. In the case of Metroidvania, that's the term that stuck.

>I never understood why many people liked Souls games until I saw this image
I honestly don't understand people who don't get the appeal of Souls combat. I mean, I understand if people don't prefer it, but the appeal should be obvious. It's basically Mike Tyson's Punch-Out in 3D with weapons.

PS that's a dumb chart, a half-assed Zelda-Nintendrone take on this Metroidvania chart. Combat in Zelda isn't really like Dark Souls until Ocarina of Time, and even then Souls combat is far superior. The biggest similarity between Dark Souls and pre-OoT Zelda is the structure of the game goals. (Ring Bells of Awakening == Collect Pendants, etc.)

True but usually the comment is made to acknowledge that the game was either innovative or fashionable for its time. The original NES Metroid has a lot of issues by modern standards, and while people might have occasionally mentioned those issues at the time, it wasn't enough to discourage people from playing the game for its good and innovative qualities. Meanwhile, "Modern Standards" for that style of game are defined more by Super Metroid and Castlevania:SOTN, and when you see recommendations it'll look more like pic related.
