NES Bionic Commando. I couldn't get past the first area, not knowing how to move around with the bionic arm and not understanding that I have to grind for extra hit points and I hate grinding. Once I got past that, it quickly became one of my all-time favorites.

Bionic Commando.

Bionic Commando Rearmed should be mentioned in every single remake thread. Even if it was originally made just for hyping the upcoming 3D action game, it's ridiculous how much effort Grin put into the game. They fixed all the problems the original had (horrible weapon balance, pointless item system and pathetic boss fights), kept all the great things about original (level design, basic arm mechanics, cheesy bits of engrish) and created lot of completely new content (the bosses, a whole new final mission, VR training challenges) without any DLC bullshit.
While the game has practically no violence/gore, they went and recreated the infamous Hitler head exploding scene (related GIF) with full force and ended up with an M rating.

Even though you can't jump (just like in the original), I would say it's one of the best platformers of all time.

I like how they managed to slip the Hitler head exploding animation past the censors in the original Bionic Commando, but I like even more how the remake went completely overboard with it and managed to get an M rating even though the rest of the game doesn't have any blood/gore.

Bionic Commando is definitely one of the best remakes ever made.
It basically fixes all the problems the original had (like unbalanced weapons and pathetic boss fights) and makes the good points even better. They also did a completely original final stage and upgraded related picture to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3u_aiZDMyM.

It's clear that you get best remakes from the hands of small teams who clearly love the originals, which holds true for both Grin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PufcTp9dlyY)) and Interceptor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yFWQS-pew8).).
