You can't blame them for their ignorance.

For the majority FF7 was their first FF, they didn't know that every installment was a new story in a new world with different characters that share similar elements.

They bought FF7 based on pure marketing thanks to those amazing CGI-only trailers that didn't show any gameplay.

Any other game that released after FF7 as the new FF8(even if it had 9,10 or 12 plot) was doomed because it didn't continue the adventures of Cloud and co.
