This is a real masterpiece. Metroid 3 just cannot begin to compare.

Has nothing on the actual GOAT Willyvania, the Sega Shiturn port of Symphony of the Night.

Is this only worth playing if you are already familiar with the story of SotN or is there like a translation patch or something?

Really? I only downloaded a emulator for Saturn so I could play its version of CSotN. Do you have any recommendations or at least the best ones for it? I'm really interested on it now.

Konami Computer Entertainment Nagoya took a wonderful action game and turned it into a existential nightmare of slowness that makes you wish they actually tried,

Definite contender for worst port of all time.

So I never played the port of Symphony of the Night, but I've read up on it. It's a bad port they say since it has tons of slowdown and extra loading times. Really? The Saturn is a system built for 2D games.

The reason is because SotN uses a 3D game engine. The 2D elements are just textures. To make the game work on the Saturn, what you'd need to do is to make a new game engine suited for the Saturn and then rebuild the game. A task that would take far more time and money than what they could do. So they ported the Playstation version of the game.

I just found this interesting, since it would seem obvious that SotN would work so well on the Saturn, but then didn't.

Now let's look at some other ports.

The best console port back in the day of Duke Nukem 3D was the Saturn version. The reason for this is that it has a custom engine designed for the Saturn. Lobotomy Software created the game Powerslave which ran that engine. Because it worked so well, they were asked to make the Duke 3D port. Graphically it's one of the more impressive engines on the system. I find it fascinating that one of the best engines on the Saturn was made by seemingly some random Western devs.

Contrast this the Saturn port of Doom, which shares similarities with the SotN port. Doom was based on PS1 Doom. It is technically inferior to Playstation Doom in a number of ways, including decreased framerate.
