I never found any lockouts while playing Conker on 1.6, i didn't ever need to config some other options like with other games (like DK64).
You might want to try PJ64 2.3 with GlideN64 4.0 and check if it runs well on your PC.

the pan is only required for a few instances like the corns or the cheeses, those aren't hard to get in any way.
At best the cogs are annoying but you need to catch them in a different way than just running to them.

The remake might have better controls and some tweaks to the main game, but it doesn't have the same charm of BFD at all.
While the graphics are amazing, the main deal of Conker was to look like a cutesy 3D Platformer so the characters doing raunchy shit was more shocking, and L&R looks too gritty and realistic to keep that intention, some of the new jokes don't even work (like the one at the beginning where the gargoyle doesn't fall) and the bleeps (which the conker team added because they thought it would make the jokes funnier) don't work.
Also, MP in L&R is great, but the one in BFD is more varied and is way more fun to play with people.

I would say OoT, but that game has been shitted on a lot in the later years, so dunno, Banjo-Tooie i guess even i don't think is a bad game.
