I remember it getting a decent amount of marketing. But the marketing was all "look at this new Tomb Raider! Physics puzzles! Massive levels! Exploration! Isn't that what you want out of Tomb Raider?" Then just crickets.

And yeah, she's still sexy as fuck in game but it was mostly marketing that I was talking about. Focused less on Lara being sexy (though that model they hired was) and more on the game. The result is the game kind of flopped, but again I think that's because most gamers don't really want what Tomb Raider was going for. Which is why the reboot made to be more like Uncharted was so much more popular.

Sure it technically counts, but misses the point. But OP is saying Shenmue looks like a PS3 game. But that's like saying Simon's Quest looks like a PS1 game because it doesn't look that different from CV Chronicles. It's a purposefully terrible example.

If Shenmue was released on PS3 looking the way it does on DC it would have been a laughing stock.

Likewise when they announced that in the new version they were adding a super gauge and special arts I did worry it was going to ruin the series. But again I was proven wrong by them and it's ended up being by far the best game in the series ever.

And it's not like I see everything through rose tinted glasses. King of Fighters, one of my favorite series of all time faltered from not great to downright terrible for a while. Tomb Raider released an incredible game (Underworld) that was largely ignored and is now replaced with a near clone of Uncharted, a series I despise.

But even at that there's so much amazing going on that I find it hard for even the worst of it to bother me.

>Tomb Raider is more like a 3D Prince of Persia

These guys get it. TR's control scheme is perfect for what it's trying to be in those games. And you don't need precision at all really, just knowing the architecture and what you can or can't do.

The Tomb Raider reboots are too much about action, but Underworld was glorious.

We did at least get Underworld. It wasn't quite the perfect modern interpretation Tomb Raider I'd wanted, but it was close and is an excellent game based around really great puzzles and a lot of physics. But unfortunately not a lot of people want that kind of game anymore. I actually wonder in some ways how many ever did in the first place, considering how quickly TR changed up it's formula to be more action focused.

As for the new ones, they really are just a totally different kind of game. I haven't played either of them, hearing descriptions was enough.

I have a friend who loves Uncharted to bits and he really wanted me to play through them. So I marathoned the first two with him and then mid way through the third just gave up and told him I couldn't stand it anymore. I get why he likes them, but to me they're the worst kind of game ever and borderline painful to play.

I couldn't agree more. Tomb Raider is one of my all time favorite games. I think it's the best in the series as well, the progression and every bit is just great.

I love the original, but the remake is also well worth playing. Also, not retro but by far the next best in the series is Underworld which is an incredible game.

I have no problem at all with 30fps games. It depends on the genre. For fighters and shmups, then 60fps is important, but for RPGs, puzzle games or slower stuff there's no reason to get it up to 60 when 30 gives you a lot more processing power to do stuff with.

DLC we've gone over. Easily ignored if you don't like it. Better yet, buying a game and not the DLC let's the company know you like the game but don't want their extras. I see nothing wrong with an option to buy something optional.

No exclusive DLC has ever been meaningful or good. Also like normal DLC you can just ignore that it exists.

Microtransactions are just another way of financing a game and they work well for some stuff. Mostly mobile games that are aimed at people who aren't me anyways. If someone wants to buy tokens in Candy Crush Saga, I have no problem with that.

RDM is bullshit, but we gamers who have a pretty lax attitude to piracy are partly to blame for it's existence.

Running servers costs money. Some games have to have pay for online just so they can exist. It's better than no online in my opinion.

There are still amazing games coming out. To me that's all that matters. I just play stuff that's fun. Seems to be working out pretty great for me.

If you want to keep your blinders so high that you don't see the good that's out there that's fine, but don't talk to me about modern gaming when you don't actually know much about it.

And with that, I'll leave you to your angst over it not being 1993 anymore and go do something more interesting.
