It would make no sense at all to call something a joke reference and a ripoff at the same time. A ripoff is something passed off as your own, and I'm not sure how you could think as obvious a reference as the Death Egg made to look and be titled as much like the Death Star as possible is in any way an attempt to pass off the most famous IP in the world as an original idea for the Sonic franchise.
It's a funny cartoonish blue hedgehog running very fast and fighting a fat guy, anon. Even the darkest Sonic content from the Archie comics keeps an ironic distance and sense of humor. You're not supposed to take Sonic seriously.

Mega Man did it much better.
Sonic in 3D was shitty alt-rock music and weird inexplicable combinations of furries with regular human crowds plus even worse attempts at involving humans and furries in dramatic lore, and voice acting for characters who are supposed to either remain silent or at most make brief nonverbal vocalizations like grunts or breathing.
If Sonic didn't talk, any lore was strictly limited to the core cast plus maybe one new ally and one new villain and not overdone, and the music wasn't Nickelback / Drowning Pool type shit it might have been alright.
Also way too much in the way of cut scenes and special features. They needed to focus more on a simple and very solid 3D game like Mario did for his. You didn't get a bunch of bonus features and story modes and alternative characters in Mario 64. You got Mario and 3D levels that worked. Sonic needed grounding, but Grounder didn't pull his weight and the franchise died. It's not a coincidence the first Sonic game that didn't get lots of hate since Sonic & Knuckles was Sonic Mania. People liked it because they went back to basics.

Similar to how people will use the words movie or car without any deliberate reference to their original source terms moving picture and horseless carriage.

There are pocket dimensions with the bonus levels so it's pretty clear the rings just go to a pocket dimension until Sonic is damaged and then they fall back out, or until he goes Super Sonic and then they get broken down for energy.

both the Japanese and US soundtracks are pretty much the best video game soundtracks ever made if you ask me.

Don't know why they changed it, but I'm glad the US soundtrack exists. Even if I'd rather play the game with the Japanese one.
