The wad itself isn't hated. What is hated is the creator for being a delusional retard with a massive ego and the fanbase throwing a fit when it turns out other wads aren't compatible with Brutal Doom along with giving terrible advice to people new to Doom like saying to skip the vanilla version and go right to Brutal. Brutal Doom itself is fine, personally I'm not that into gameplay wads but I see the appeal.

I like to think of Brutal Doom as the "gateway drug" of Doom mods; it introduces a lot of new people to the modding scene and they either A) stick to that one "gateway" mod and never try anything else [stereotypical BD fan], B) try new mods and acquire different tastes and preferences [may or may not move on from BD entirely], or C) play it once or twice and never come back for more. It's an okay mod on its own but way over-hyped by game journalists and BD fanboys, but at the very least it's given more exposure to Doom/Doom modding and has introduced new people to the scene (for better or for worse). I (re)played through D2 with it once, enjoyed it, and then moved on to different mods, now I just stick to Smooth Doom.

It's mostly because of the drama surrounding the mod than the mod itself. On it's own it's a really fun 'Doom Comic' inspired ultraviolet power fantasy.
However the community that surrounds it is a putrid mess filled with edgy 12 year olds who don't understand Doom's charm.
The unironic "RIP AND TEAR XD" kind of kids. They think that BD is just an updated version of doom, instead of a over the top violence mod inspired by the comic people found funny and liked ironically (I hope).
However the author isn't any different and sure as fuck isn't helping.
