You could go this route, but the jump/attack is far more effective. Practice fighting them normally, yes, but I disagree that playing their game is the way to go. There are only two points in the game that require you fighting the enemies without jumping, one being against a blue Iron Knuckle at the Island palace, and the other is much later in the Ocean palace.

With the Iron Eagles, for the blue ones that are required to beat the Great Palace, you can just hang at the top of the blocks and let him run in to your sword. The red ones are easy enough to best with the up thrust.

Laying a haymaker of jump attacks eliminates a lot of tedious fighting with them. But you do need to practice being fast enough to react to enemy cues.

I'm a really big Zelda fan, own them all. Zelda 2 is my favorite.

Everyone has that game, the one that everyone says is hard but they can make look easy. Zelda 2 is that game for me. Might be kinda sad, but I often wish Zelda had real challenge from the mechanics, rather than just increasing the damage or decreasing the heart spawns.
