Do not start with shmups

Play anything by SEGA and Capcom. Then maybe some Konami stuff if you want to get into the Japanese side.

Sonic 3D Blast
NiGHTS Into Dreams
Sonic R
Virtual-On
Pandemonium
Mega Man X4
Die Hard Arcade
Street Fighter Collection
SEGA Ages
Marvel Super Heroes
Guardian Heroes

Most people like the Daytona games and SEGA Rally. Some people like Virtua Fighter 2, personally I prefer Fighting Vipers and Fighters Megamix, maybe Last Bronx. Manx TT is alright but there's only like one course.

The only shmups really worth trying imo are the Konami shmups, Hyper Duel, and Radiant Silvergun. Not even a fan of Silvergun personally but it is an exclusive and generally held in high regard. The reason I say don't start with shmups is you will get bored very quickly, there are a lot of them but they're not all necessarily great or even good (especially if you prefer the older Genesis/TG-16 style)

This is a good list. Magic Knight Rayearth is especially worth checking out

Saturn having no proper Sonic game or other Genesis IP's is definitely a monkey paw for me. It's a good system but it doesn't even feel like a Genesis successor to me. Others would be stuff like Banjo-Threeie coming in the form of Nuts and Bolts, not being able to explore the castle in Mario Galaxy, not being able to actually ride Yoshi in Mario 64, the ice key and Stop and Swop eggs in B-K being effectively useless since it was never fully realized, no Grunty's Lair Banjo-Tooie, not being able to play as Metal Mario and other characters in Smash Bros. (fixed in Melee and later entries, sort of), and Zero having limited functionality for some reason in Mega Man X3

Start with anything by SEGA and Capcom before anything else. Weebs will rush in here and tell you to play ten obscure shmups but those aren't the best nor the most important games on the system.

Also don't belive the "2D pOwErHoUsE!!!" nonsense, it only applies to like five games

>no fighting games
>Virtual-On
lol

1. Sonic 3D Blast
2. NiGHTS Into Dreams
3. Sonic R
4. Pandemonium
5. Mega Man X4

Virtual-On would be number 4 for me too but it's technically a fighting game. To answer your question I held an NA Model 1 controller a few months ago, I honestly kind of prefer it. Then again I also prefer the 3-button Genesis controller over the 6-button which is apparently an unpopular opinion in some circles

LaunchBox Database tends to have really high quality boxart. Creative Uncut is also a good resource but idk about the overall quality/resolution

I got back into it maybe about a month or so ago, it's alright but those A Ranks take me forever. Also I forgot how to beat Jackle and it's screwing me up. It felt great playing it to completion (both stories) a few years ago, though. Probably one of the best games on Saturn

Panzer Dragoon Saga

Daytona Championship Circuit Edition

NiGHTS Into Dreams

Not sure about Metal Gear Solid though. Stealth games didn't really exist on Saturn to my knowledge

I hate to say it but as much as I enjoy seeing these I usually end up not buying them when I can just play the original games instead. I think they are great for newcomers or as a way of introducing younger audiences to older series, but I usually just end up skipping them. I totally support game preservation but there is really no reason for me to spend money on a game when I can just download and play the original rom (or original cartridge/disc if I own it) for free.

That said, I think they're doing fine. Just port NiGHTS or something and call it a day. As well as the games you listed, they also licensed out Alex Kidd and Wonder Boy for Miracle World DX and the MWIV remake.

It's also probably better than any Saturn Sonic game inculding Virtua Fighter. Go figure

No

I thoroughly enjoyed NiGHTS but Burning Rangers has some annoying issues (cutscene after every rescue, confusing maps, no actual enemies or music, etc.) and just comes off as a tech demo for me.

Saturn still takes a lot more power to emulate than N64. As it pertains to this board, Xbox is probably still the hardest, followed by PS2/GameCube and then Saturn. Good way to test your device if you're playing on a budget is to see how well it does with those systems. If it can handle them then it can handle N64 no sweat.

I played on a real SEGA Saturn one time in my life, decades ago at my cousin's house one summer. He had the NiGHTS Sampler and I think Street FIghter Alpha 1 or 2. Anyway. as the story goes, we played NiGHTS that evening and none of us could be Gillwing, but I remember hitting him in the eye somehow and it looked cool. The next day I watched him play Street Fighter for a little bit. I never touched NiGHTS again until last year when I finally started emulating Saturn games and played both stories until the end to unlock the true ending. It's a fantastic game and makes me feel like I'm rediscovering a lost part of my childhood, since the most I ever played was up to Gillwing. There's also Game Boy in general, since I never owned a Game Boy growing up, but knew kids that had one. Harvest Moon I constantly heard about from Nintendo Power but never tried until I got a proper emulator handheld with GB form factor.

There's a handful of really good Japanese exclusives, but most of my favorites were regular mainstream releases, just like with most other consoles. I think the Saturn tends to get compared to TurboDuo a lot, which is understandable seeing as they have a lot of the same kinds of games, but even then I'd say the Saturn had a much stronger presence in the west.
