Uggh...
Just decided to fire up Arcane Dimensions and suddenly quakespasm is giving me an error it never gave me before and I cant find anything about it really:

The startup console can be seen while its loading but then it just plain crashes out.

I played Q2 a lot but there's simply no match, the "tech-demo" meme outclasses the "real game", if we want to speak in /vr/ terms. I could go on describing things that are literally been discussed to death, like the setting, the dark ambient soundtrack, the lovecraftian themes, the overall feeling of hopelessness, the satisfying weapons, the level design etc. but at the end of the day Q1 is simply the right way to go with its consistency. Way more direct: go into a level, shoot things, resolve the maze, rinse and repeat. It may sound repetitive at first glance but actually it's a great formula that always worked, the real chore is actually the Q2 gameplay where you have to navigate into these convoluted space bases along with your unsatisfying pew-pew guns; at least you have an ass-kicking soundtrack, but personally that's not enough for me to come back into it, so i'll always revisit Q1 when i want some real, fast paced action.

I guess my question is, alot of what ive seen in gzdoom could've been done on like 2003 and previous architecture. However it requires up to date shit to run hardware.

However alot of it can be done without openGL entirely.

Whenever did 3.0 become necessary to do the same shit that was done on quake3...
