The real question is, why are threads shitting on consoles like this accepted? If this thread was about a Nintendo console, it would be deleted in a heartbeat. Yet, we are allowed to dump on an obscure console with no quarter?

>Crusader of Centy and Beyond Oasis were unfortunately amateur crap
This is the problem with trying to discuss these things, by all objective metrics both of those games mog Zelda, along with Landstalker on the Mega Drive, or Neutopia II and Valkyrie no Densetsu on the PC Engine, or Marchen Maze on the X68000, but of course, because they're not Zelda, they don't benefit from being put on you're holy pedestal of worthwhile games, because the only thing you are interested in playing is whatever overplayed and trite Nintendo IP's.
>Super Metroid
This is a waste of breath, but Flashback: The Quest for Identity and Generations Lost on the Mega Drive, or Skeleton Krew on the Mega Drive or Amiga are both far superior environmentally ambient action games, but I really do not see what you people see in Super Metroid to begin with, wandering empty hallway's with zero enemies was never my idea of fun. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was where that formula actually became good.
>NOOOOO THOSE games are SHIT!!! Nintendo games are WAY BETTER!!!!
You don't actually like games, and sadly, you probably never will.

>snes cpu could do more per clock cycle
And what, exactly, could it do more of "per clock cycle"? Because, if we are counting the operations that involve waiting and doing nothing, then yes, the SNES CPU can "do more", but the actually useful data migration and arithmetics operations require a minimum of 5 clock cycles on SNES, whilst the Mega Drive can easily take advantage of it's 16 general purpose registers and perform the same operations in 4. That means, not only is the clock speed 3 TIMES faster, but the CPU design is also more efficient clock for clock. Pretty sad for the 2 years newer and more expensive SNES, isn't it? It's no wonder it simply could not handle the fast paced, smooth arcade action that made the otherwise excellent 16-bit era so legendary, which it's competitors could all easily live up to.

Have you considered the possibility that you're precious tendie games are, perhaps, not actually the "best games ever" like you've been spouting off for literal decades? I'm fucking tired of hearing people gush over this Mario shit for so long, the tides are finally turning, and I couldn't be more pleased.
And yes, PlayStation games are leagues better.

Stunning shots that are far more vivid than anything I have seen on the "master of colour" SNES. Colour palette capacity be damned, the SNES being decent at colours is a wholesale myth and it needs to die.

How? Using fastROM hacks? I have bad news for you if you think those hacks "prove" anything, they do not, even leaning on you're cheating and expensive fastROM cartridge expansions, the SNES is still a mere 3.5 mhz, HALF the speed when compared the Mega Drive, PC Engine, even the fucking Amiga is TWICE THE SPEED. FastROM hacked games still suffer serious and debilitating slowdowns, and further, no amount of you're cheating chips will ever fix these additional problems:
- Mega Drive 6.4 mbps DMA compared SNES puny 2.8 mbps, over twice the bandwidth
- Mega Drive up to 320x448 with no limit to color count vs. SNES far smaller 256x224 limit before being restricted to a pitiful and unacceptably low 16 simultaneous colors
- No limit to sprite tiles compared SNES tiny 16 kbs limit to sprite tiles
- 64 kbs RAM fully accessable at all times compared SNES mere 8 kbs RAM available, as the remaining 120 kbs is inaccessable in other banks
- Sample rate, 52 khz compared SNES muffled and filtered 32 khz, almost half the sample rate
The list goes on, unlike the list of playable SNES games that aren't trite Nintendo IP's or underwhelming SquareSoft titles from before they hit their prime on the PlayStation.

>was the 4th gen the last true "core" era of gaming?
Yes, but pic could not be less related. The SNES specialised in casual games designed for toddlers, story game "JRPG's" that have little to no actual gameplay depth, and Mahjongg and horse racing games for elders. Action games, forget it, it's 2.68 mhz CPU slows to a screeching halt simply moving a handful of sprites around, which many casual gamers praise for making "more accessible". The real "core gamers" were playing the far more powerful Mega Drive, PC Engine, Amiga, X68000, or Neo Geo.

>There are a few masochists who work on it.
Thus far, the SNES homebrews "library" consists of a handful of very small and very short games, barely qualifying as anything more than a mere minigame tech demo. One of the biggest issues with such flawed, bottlenecked hardware such as the SNES, is that, by nature of it being so much harder to work with, it is, in turn, that much harder to actually produce a finished game, so the misguided souls who illogically decide to try to wrangle a game out of the SNES, end up burning out and giving up long before their game reaches completion. In it's era, SNES games were produced by large studios with huge budgets, so the difficulty factor was largely "paid for", so to speak, but that is no longer the case, and this herculean effort required to make an SNES game compared to the 16-bit alternatives, is the prime reason why SNES games of the same scope and quality as Mega Drive homebrews will never be seen.
Pic related, even during it's time, developers were not shy to let the world know what they thought of working with the SNES. One would be a fool to subject themselves to that experience voluntarily.

SNES fanboys will always be coping that their deficient, flawed hardware is not something any rational developer would ever want to develop for, and they will never get homebrews as a result.

Nobody is impressed with you're Rendering Ranger shit, we can all see right through it, and you're attempts to push the SNES Parodius, which is totally outperformed by it's PC Engine and X68000 counterparts, or Axelay, which slows to a crawl at the slightest provocation, or even Super Aleste, a contender for slowest and more boring shooter ever, it is no wonder it doesn't slow down, it doesn't need to with how little it's doing, what a pathetic laundry list of unimpressive games that you keep touting, you're sad and pitiful SNES is completely flanked by ALL it's competitors, it was the slowest and most bottlenecked console of the generation BY FAR, and we're no longer buying into the dogma that it was "the best" at anything, much less even remotely good.

SNES Doom sounds like muffled shit, yet again, not impressed. 32X Doom is well known to not make good use of the superior Mega Drive sound hardware, so try this on for size: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FehpU0sjXrQ

Again, the Mega Drive covers of this game's music sound vastly superior: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rchnNT4mULw
So far none of you have managed to defend this ill-conceived argument that the Mega Drive somehow has inferior audio capabilities, in fact, it seems more obvious than ever that the opposite is true. But, if you need any further proof, I offer you this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWVmPtr9O0g
Mega Drive does.

>Calling the game "good" at all should be subjective by the same metric so I don't see the point anyway of singling out difficulty as the no-no subjective zone.
Wrong, Nintendo is almighty and shan't be criticised or given fair critique. If you dare speak out against our Nintendo overlords and their catalog of impeccable, perfect games, you are Australian, and subject to being dogpiled and banned, that sort of subversive discussion is simply not tolerated.
