Just because an environment is bright doesn't mean the screen is lit. The situation in this pic for example, you can see how there's lots of ambient light but the screen is barely visible. Normally a backlight would solve the problem, but in a lighting situation like this the GBL's backlight would be useless, it isn't bright enough to be visible unless there's no other light around it because otherwise it gets drowned out.

Basically the GBL is useful if you're either in intense light or pitch black, but for the "middle of the road" cases it doesn't offer any advantages over a GBP.
