It has some really good ones.
Anyway, 5th gen was kinda weak in 2D in general.
Saturn got some really good Capcom/SNK fighting ports, and PS1 has SOTN I guess (which has a lot of divisive opinions due to changing the style of Castlevania, making it more abut exploration/RPG rather than action-platforming), but in general, if your thing is 2D, stay in 3rd and 4th gen.

At first it wasn't even my favorite treasure game, now I just can't get enough of it. Ever time I play it it's pure joy and surpassing my top scores keep me going through all the 44 stages.
It has like a lot of things I like about multiple genres all in one game with unique controls and mechanics. I also enjoy the music quite a lot. It has become "my" game over the years and I didn't even notice it, it dethroned old favorites of mine like Super C or Revenge of Shinobi.

Really tough decision between the likes of Gunstar Heroes, Sin and Punishment, RSG, Mischief Makers, Alien Soldier and on the non-retro side of things, Omega Factor and Gradius V are strong contenders too, but for me it's gotta be Bangai O.
I feel it's their most unique and passionate game, and it has a particular feel similar to japanese computer games, since it was inspired by an old X1 game. The N64 version specifically makes me feel like I'm playing a Sharp X68000 game.
Fun as fuck game to replay over and over for score. A shame the Xbox 360 game was still not ported to modern systems, I still never played that one.

Bangai-O turned 20 the other day. Say something nice about it.
Also post your best stages scores, 64 or DC version.

For Japan-exclusive ones:
Bangai-O
Sin and Punishment
Custom Robo and Custom Robo V2
Bomberman 64 (different from US Bomberman 64)
Puyo Puyo Sun 64

There are a couple. The other obvious Treasure game besides Sin and Punishment is Bangai O.
Custom Robo 1 and 2 are legit fun games.
Wonder Project J2 is kind of a cult classic at this point, and has an english translation.
There's a bunch of AKI wrestling games that are Japan-only.
The Japan-only Bomberman 64 game from 2001 is fun, not worth the price it sells for now but I assume you have an everdrive.

I wish more games took advantage of the N64's ability to have dual controls with either the d-pad or the c buttons and the stick.
It works wonderfully on Bangai-O

It's interesting how Bangai-O (the robot itself) got re-designed for each game.
The original is probably my favorite design (although the other designs are also pretty rad) and this cover is probably my favorite.
Japanese DC cover is pretty awesome too.

Obligatory if you like Treasure. Even if you played the Dreamcast remake, this one is different enough. Only downside is that it's a bit pricey especially if you want it CIB, but it's justified because it's a legit rare low-print game.

Stuff like Chameleon Twist isn't really considered some of the best N64 stuff, though.

Better controls, more balanced and risk-rewarding game system.
And while the Dreamcast version has enhanced visuals and sound, plus a few extra levels, I still love the N64's more 16-bit graphics style, though that's entirely subjective.

Anyway whatever your favorite version of this game is, you oughta play both because they feel very different from each other, yet both are awesome. Most people will prefer the DC version because it looks and sounds nicer, while others might appreciate the more dynamic controls on the N64. People who have already mastered the DC ver. definitely need to play it again on N64.

There's some expensive games on N64, but nothing on the level of EarthBound or Panzer Dragoon Saga.

Bakuretsu Muteki Bangai-O is a rare game (only 10,000 copies of it exist), but it's actually not that expensive considering its low print run, you can probably get a copy for less than 100 dollars. Probably complete with box would be a bit more, but I never saw it reach $200.

Might become more expensive over time though so I'd snag a copy ASAP if you like N64/Treasure games.

Wave Race 64
Pilotwings 64
1080 Snowboarding
Snowboard Kids 1 & 2
Beetle Adventure Racing
Star Wars Rogue Squadron (although it's also on PC, original version is N64)
Doom 64
Hybrid Heaven
Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
Goemon's Great Adventure
Paper Mario
F-Zero X

Also as already mentioned, Mischief Makers is a must.
If you can import (and mod your N64 to play JP games) both Sin and Punishment and Bangai-O are great Treasure titles that can be played without knowledge of japanese.

Also if you like wrestling games, the games developed by AKI for the N64 are some of the best around.

Bakuretsu Muteki Bangai-O

The Dreamcast remake got released in the west, but I like the original N64 version better: more interesting mechanics like having a combo meter and a shop to buy upgrades from, but most of all the controls feel amazing and take full advantage of the N64 controller (like being able to shoot using the C-unit buttons or the stick).
