Because it has about as much content as SMB1 in a post SMBUSA-SMW world, while also being slower & clunkier.
I'd say it has way more personality but not really taking into account all the normal mario shit like mushrooms & turtles would be weird as fuck when they were new.
It was good for gameboy standards until SML2 existed.

Oh absolutely, I think the series lost a lot of it's charm beginning there and only got worse the more they started carefully mandating and monitoring what could be apart of Mario games. Even some newer characters or concepts just feel flat or bland, like it was meticulously analyzed by corporate suits to feel as manufactured as possible.

Mario stuff like Super Mario Land 2, Paper Mario, Luigi's Mansion, etc. gives me life though. I live and breathe off of that shit. I don't know if I'm able to describe what made it so special, I didn't even get to experience some of it until later in life so it's difficult to think that nostalgia is a factor.

Don't know why but Bowser with black eyebrows in that image. looks kind of weird.

Super Mario Land 2, it has some of the most unique level themes and designs, I always get a kick out of seeing all the weirdness it had to offer. It's typical for Mario games to feel like obstacle courses, but Super Mario Land 2 felt like a weird little island that could actually exist somewhere in the Mushroom Kingdom. It also introduced Wario, so that's a huge plus.
>Sports
Mario Superstar Baseball for GameCube. If Mario Golf is relaxing and Mario Tennis is more exciting, then it's like a combination between those two feelings. It's perfect to enjoy casually and also competitively.
>Non-Sports Spin-Off
Luigi's Mansion or Wario Land 3, although I'd probably lean more towards Luigi's Mansion unless I can say the entire Wario Land series, it's hard picking a favorite.
>RPG
Paper Mario 64 easily, although there's special place in my heart for the Mario & Luigi series.

Super Mario Land 2, and it easily has the biggest personalities of a Mario game. Each zone is just so radically different from standard platforming levels and maintains a very strong and cohesive theme. It all feels very nice to be immersed in. It also has one my favorite artstyles and pieces of artwork throughout the Mario series, I wish Yoichi Kotabe's 2D artstyle was used more frequently. It'd be nice to see a Mario game that's entirely hand-drawn.
