I'm more of a backlit Pocket kinda guy. I don't recommend this Pocket mod because preparing the screen is so risky (the soldering itself is braindead easy unless you bivert and I didn't). If you really want a modded GBC pony up the $ for a freckle shack. With a front lit screen you may as just keep playing your SP, it's just so ugly imo

I backlit my Game Boy Pocket for use with the Game Boy Camera. Taking pictures is more pleasurable with a backlight, so the SP is a okay solution, but unfortunately the SP's form factor makes it harder to use than top-loading Game Boys. I opted to mod my GBP because I wanted both a backlight and the ability to easily take selfies. That might sound silly, but whenever I bring my GBCamera to a social gathering, everyone wants to take a selfie.
The mod was a huge pain in the ass and cost a fair amount of money because I didn't already have a soldering iron etc. The new GBColor lcds that OP is talking about are probably a better deal if you want to backlight a gameboy on the cheap and don't already have materials to do it.
When I actually want to play Game Boy games I use my 3ds. I only installed the mod strictly for camera utility.
