I love Master of Magic and have played it to death for decades now, most recently the community patch version.
I just bought Caster of Magic to try something new. Did I fuck up or is it a good improvement?
What are the biggest changes in your opinion?

Fuck yes

Also Master of Magic, a 4x game. I have been replaying it via GoG and just bought the caster of magic mod on top of it for a new experience. Mixed reviews so fingers crossed!

>needed
Some games had thick manuals despite not needing them, because they were awesome games.

>Who said anything about being first?
It's more-or-less implied by being "genre-defining."
If a genre is already established when a game is released it can't be genre-defining.
>Halo (and Halo 2) didn't change the rules
Exactly

Of course if you go really narrow with subgenre definitions, this question gets easier. For example Master of Magic did not establish the 4X genre, but its particular spin on it (fantasy setting where the guy in charge of the empire is a powerful Wizard) has not been surpassed despite its weak diplomacy features and attempts such as the Age of Wonders series to carry the torch.

Master of Magic is worth it.
But you do have to realize that in the 80s we weren't inundated with videogame options and couldn't play all the time anyway. We also didn't have an internet full of porn and wikis for every game imaginable a 3 second search away. If a game had a thick manual I'd just read it for fun, especially if it was something like a D&D game where they'd include descriptions of spells and monsters and leveling charts for character classes and such. It would really inspire my imagination and I'd do shit like draw up my own dungeons on graph paper.

If I was a kid today I'm not sure I'd have the same urge to read that kind of thing either and if I had creative urges there are probably games like minecraft to scratch that itch.

Is this the best retro 4x game besides Master of Orion 2?

> Ever tried the Aureus MoM mod? Klackons are kick ass to play there. They have merging (like the Wyrm) and kan move across half the map. Anyway in the normal game I prefer barbarians.

The shit people think up. Master of Magic is decried as poorly-balanced. Of course: it was designed in the early nineties before a million people on the internet could provide instant Q.A. and patches could be uploaded to everyone straight away, as needed. The various minor imbalances and exploits have become endearing, a part of the experience.

So what does someone do that qualifies as "balance?" They go and give a normal unit something absolutely unbelievable, like Merging. So they can teleport anywhere on the field. You have to try really hard to actually lose a fight with that. Way to balance the game hotshot. I don't really care to play someone's trash-grade personal opinions, so I stick with vanilla versions of these games.

Take Master of Orion and Civilization, mash them together and set them in a magical fantasy setting and you have Master of Magic. It is really one of the greats and is still quite playable to this day.

To answer OP, no.

This is the best answer:

God damn I love this game. One of the main drawbacks is the god awful music.

Do you anons have sound tracks you like to listen to? I generally play MOO2 OST in the background when I play MoM, but it might be worth me trying out some others.
