I miss going over to my friends' place, as he had a few computers hooked up on LAN. Someone was always playing it and I can still hear the soundtrack or destruction noises all the time. The computer isn't the challenge, but the real fun is in LAN play as promised with its scope.

There might be a VR approximation. That's what emulation is for. Advances in AI could replicate some of that. I still walk into a Best Buy once in a while, but the real disappointment is that they no longer have a clearance section of games, just at best a $20USD cardboard bin.

Aside from technical issues, it was an exciting time spanning multiple eras it a sort of uncontrolled wild west. There were games tailored specifically to the expected mouse/keyboard controls and unique from console games such as RTS, MMORPG, space combat/flight simulation, FPS, and sexy games. Imagine stores with aisles of games stacked from the floor to above your height like a grocer's. You hunt for the latest 0-day warez, chat in IRC or MUD/MUCK, seek things out in newsgroups, or "share/lend" new games with your friends/family/classmates/strangers. A lot of file compression with PKzip to discs and virus scans were an unfortunate trade off to the cracks which came with .nfo text files with ascii art and maybe razor or whatever cool group had a demoscene-styled intro file with some banging music to cool effects. You can get together with your friends, classmates, and/or enthusiast club agree to a large space to bring computers for multiplayer-LAN where you coordinate the massive effort of transportation and food plans. With CD-burners, we'd start movements in trying to prop up Dreamcast sales by offering burned copies, introducing others to obscure and different music that would not be on radio stations, show off funny/weird/awesome videos found like "Tokyo Breakfast"/martial arts flicks/anime/fighting game combo videos to J-pop/J-rock. It was truly a wild west in our gaming enjoyment, but things are better now with parity to console releases, convenience through the internet, mature emulation, and comparatively lower cost to entry into the PC space now.

I kind of favor Warcraft 2. Spent the most time with it.

Been to a few and the experience was great. To me the immediacy of having fun with friends and strangers in FPS, RTS, or even just simply showing off in any game/application was a fun time. It was an opportunity to see or maybe even get things you may not have had. While the internet has gotten faster and broadened the pool, it isn't as much of an event to me at least.

In all the games, it was great continually clicking on the units to hear the eventual funny dialogue line. It is always the great first impression when a unit type is introduced to the player.

I remember there used to be physical locations, where you'd take the bus to the rich places away from all the gun violence. They would have shelves of games stacked from your knees to the ceiling. Places like Fry's, Software Etc., Best Buy, Babagges, Electronic's Boutique, Circuit City, etc. would have aisles, like your grocers, of software in a well lit and air conditioned location. It was very nice, but the danger was getting back via bus if you'd make such and expensive purchase, as the risk of getting robbed at gunpoint was very high.

I think I liked Warcraft 2 more than 3, but that may be nostalgia speaking. Don't forget about Unreal Tournament, Planescape: Torment, Thief 1+2, and Deus Ex

It was amazing value for $20USD. I guess maybe there is less waste and more eco friendly with modern digital distribution, but my old sensibilities still enjoy reading from books. Now updates and patches are more easily obtained, and more cost effective to just browse for the information online, so it is better now.

It was the hotness in those days. All computers pretty much had them installed. I remember going to internet/LAN cafes which had RTS networked to play. It is one of those standout genres that worked best on PC. Maybe these days more cross-platform development took that focus away from a PC centric game development

I remember Microsoft had Ensemble Studios which did RTS. MS was the publisher of games like Rise of Nations, Age of Empires, Age of Mythology, etc. They were part of that 90s RTS movement. They did release the Halo Wars games which are RTS as well.

The Commander Pack was $11USD on a Black Friday sale. It was so amazing, I was hoping Supreme Commander would match its awesomeness. My first RTS was the original Warcraft, but I play at the lowest speed setting to get the ideal formations/positions leading to quite the surprise at how fast my friends prefer playing the games. I think the genre may have passed by me, but in its day it was so much fun at lan parties as a change of pace from FPS.

They got too addicted to the massive amounts of money from World of Warcraft.

Back in those days, everyone had some Blizzard game installed. I also loved playing Quake 3, Unreal Tournament, and Tribes. Dungeon Keeper and a Civilization game will keep you addicted. Some infinity engine RPG like Planescape Torment, Fallout, etc. Load up on some hentai games, emulators, doujin shooters, point & click adventures. Sprinkle some anime movies like GitS, J-pop/rock mp3s, superplay/combo videos and that would be like a quintessential computer of the day.

I remember when their games were on every computer. They made it easy, given the quality for the price. I still want to play the game based on my favorite porn animations, and I've been trying to save up to get an Xbox One X to play it. The girl on the cover is really cute and her animations are great. The game seems to be popular to my young co-workers.
