I feel that the main thing that makes most retro video games difficult is the fact that many force you to go all of the way back from the beggining after dying too many times. Of course, just because you might have unlimited continues, passwords or even saves it doesn't guarantee you'll be able to beat it, it might still be hard, but at least it feels somewhat fair. Nothing feels worse than making it really far and having to start all over again, it feels especially cheap if you look up longplays and realize that an average run takes 30 minutes or less, because then it becomes clear that you being taken back to the beggining was a design choice made purely to extend length. I don't mind the concept of having to go back to the beggining when dying to many times, and it is fun seeing you getting better and better at the parts you're more familiar with due to replaying them so much, but the execution is important, if you're deliberately given few or no extra lives, continues or even health, then it's just stressful.
