Why had no mmo come close to capturing the level of exploration, teamwork, epicness of everquest?

I keep coming back to this game and despite some of the incredibly painful parts I still come back for more. There is a stupid amount of content in just the first two expansions. You play a new class and it's a totally different experience.

Despite being almost 20 years old, project 1999 averages almost
1200 players at peek hours every day of the week. People wake up in the middle of the night to log on and kill a mob/deny pixels to other guilds. Folks sell items and characters for real money (despite the risk of getting every single account you touched banned) folks fuck others over for pixels causing incredible levels of sodium. It's serious business over there.

Outside of pantheon (which will probably be shit) seems like no one is even trying to make a mmo that comes close to being as massive and challenging as everquest.

Everquest, the first MMO (not 3D MUDs like Ultima), released in March 1999.

Project 1999 is a thing now as well. Perfectly capturing the game's evolution and expansion release dates relatively perfectly.

And the game is still getting expansions with The Shattered Mirror(?).

Can we get an EQ thread going? So many great memories playing this game. If you haven't played in a while and want to experience nostalgia, I suggest trying project 1999 or another EQ emulated server.

I've recently become very curious about the original Everquest and I was wondering /vr/ had any interesting stories to share of there times spent playing. I've seen EverQuest: A Retrospective, so I know how charmingly primitive the game was. But I've also heard something about raids that lasted 14 hours or something?

hey /vr/. everquest is releasing its 20th expansion today. its been in development for 15 straight years. released in 1999, it created an entire genre of mmo games that have been copied over and over again. so lets have us a good old EQ general thread

Is EverQuest retro? It launched for the PC in March 1999.

If so, let's discuss EverQuest memories. I'll start.
