Thief originally had many 64x64 textures. 4 times is only 256x256. My general plan was to have the textures match the hand drawn mission briefings better, instead of trying to make them look real. Also so textures of statues or whatever taken from the real world would match the in-game lore instead.
I made a few that were 512x512, but mapped to cover twice the geometry as the original textures so they would look the same, and the UVs would line up with texture details, but repeat less. In case someone cut a hole in a brick wall or something, so the hole would still match the bricks...
But anyway. I'm looking at them right now... Might pick this back up...
