If you are making yet another indie sidescroller mario clone, at least shoot for Yoshi's Island over Mario Bros. Mode7 it up, add parallax scrolling backgrounds, pseudo-3d bosses, make your sprites pre-rendered from 3D models. Remember developers were always trying to overcome the limitations of the machine they were developing for, not trying to conform to a "retro"-aesthetic.
