I didn't know whether to post this here or in the obscure ps1 game thread.
Anyway, this is Fuuun Gokuu Ninden, a 2D platformer-action game based on Journey to the West, you control Gokuu, the monkey king, and use his magic baton to beat enemies, he also can hop on the flying cloud.
You can also play as the pig, and as the kappa.
The style of the game is pre-rendered 3D-looking graphics for the characters and enemies, and 2D for the background. It's not bad, not great either, an average, ok game.
I remember reading it was made by the guy who did the Tomba games, but can't confirm.

There actually aren't a ton of these on the PS1, SNES/Mega Drive are definitely better if you want 2D sidescrollers.

But anyway, pic is Fuuun Gokuu Ninden, a cute action-platformer, graphics are rendered ala Donkey Kong Country, but it's 100% 2D.
The game is alright, not the best you'll play in the genre but it does its work if you want to play some on the PS1. The best thing about it is that it's based on Journey to the west and you can choose to play as Gokuu (the monkey king), the pig or the kappa.

Here's another PS1 game based on journey to the west, and this is a traditional 2D sidescroller with pre-rendered graphics.

This thread also needs some Goemon, PS1 has Oedo Daikaiten and N64 has Goemon's Great Adventure.

There isn't as many of those as you might think on the PS1. Or rather, there aren't many ones that are actually that good, but 5th gen was like that in general.

Tomba is one of the most liked overall.

Pic related is Fuun Gokuu Ninden and it's a decent (read: not great but playable) 2D action platformer with pre-rendered graphics, based on Journey to the West, you can select the monkey, the kappa or the pig guy, all with different abilities.
Worth playing if you're craving some 2D plats.

Tomba 1 and 2 aren't unknown.

Here's a lesser known one though, Fuuun Gokuu Ninden, from the creator of Tomba.
2D sidescroller with prerendered graphics.
Don't expect a masterpiece, but it's a fun little game.

Fuun gokuu ninden.

It's a japan-only game I got to play as a kid thanks to piracy.
It's purely traditional 2D platforming with cute prerendered style graphics.
It has the traditional Western to the West setting and you can choose to play as the different characters. Gokuu, the monkey, can ride the cloud and fly on some levels.

Don't expect any masterpiece, but it's worth playing if you like these kind of games.
And I'm not sure how accurrate this is, but I've read it was made by the guy who later made Tomba.
