To be honest, I kind of forgotten most of the story, since it is practically a running joke Adol and ships are an awful combination. Still the play of the game was plenty fun for me.

I skipped 5, but I still enjoyed Ark a lot. Controlled nice enough and was a simple, pleasant experience. It looked good in its day to me.

Yeah, the Ys series is one of my favorites. The ones on PC are really well done. It was really gorgeous art and refined that I had to preorder from the falcom shop for the 2nd Eternal game. I also like the TITS series, there's a lot of character in its whole world, and I did not expect it to be the same as the Ys series.

>>9266501
Thanks. Not many do, but I like the original physical stuff as well as digital releases. It is simply because I come from a different time and I'm just used to having them that way.

It's actually kinda so-so. The interface is clunky in that version, but I got it because I was a fan of Megatech's games in general.

The packaging on some of these PC games is really nice. Even the surface of the boxes have a feel that is special. I remember getting Ys II Eternal from the falcom shop, and along with all the stuff they gave with the game box, there's a lot of stuff inside the game box too. They really made the effort in making getting an official copy extra special, probably to discourage bootlegging.

They just continued with the PC platform when it was mostly abandoned, and the space was increasingly dominated by Korean MMOs like Ragnarok and Lineage, which they did not have sufficient talent to compete so they also made the bold move to development on portables in hopes of some profitability. I remember getting the Ys Eternal games from the falcom store back then, but I am having trouble finding some footage of the store. It was not a popular spot, there was so little interest to PC that it was kind of boutique and lonely, but they were so friendly. It is just simply the the kinds of games I like just simply are not popular.

I wish I were as cunning and able to pull off such a heist but no, I got them long ago. Back then the Gainax shop and Falcom shop were right there with the studios, and they welcomed the sales. Wonderful small storefronts for their fans. It is not easy to get some of the software because a lot of these kinds of games feature characters under the age of 18 which is unacceptable and unlawful in North America.

>>6178203
That's good to know. Since I cannot find any such drivers on the official websites, I will have to constrain to just a single 120GB SSD for now. I hope it works at that capacity, but until I start putting it all together, I at least now know of potential headaches that may arise. Thanks for the warning. I hope to figure out if I can have maybe 2 drives soon too.

>>6178214
There were some old games like Wing Commander 2 which I remembered played well on a 286-12 but was getting a bit fast on a 386DX-40 near unplayibly fast on a 486DX4-100, so a 286-16 or 386SX-33 may be the sweet spot. Privateer felt right on a Pentium-75. Most of my DOS fun was had on the 386DX-40 so around there is a nice place for the games I played (prior to Doom/FPS games).

>>6178319
I believe there are also sound enhancement mods too. The TFix should also allow for extremely high framerates too. So any modern graphics card can do.

I like the Ys series, played through different versions, and had fun every time. I have only played the first Zwei!, but it was really charming. Despite how Sorcerian always looks a generation behind visually, I still find it silly fun. Popful Mail is pretty good, well worth a try. Lord Monarch was a great free game. If you don't mind modern Falcom, the TITS series is pretty good too.

Falcom makes some of my most favorite games. I was nice that one could e-mail them with rudimentary English to get some of their games back then, but they were costly, so I didn't get into the Eiyuu Densetsu games. Everything is different in Japan, for PC software, it is more expensive to get a real physical edition, rather than cheaper to curb copying. It was nice they included so much stuff with the real releases. Thanks for the links!

I was lead to believe to let the SSD do its own garbage collection but I also noticed there are some Intel SSD tools. I am not clear if I should/could use the 120GB SSD for Win98SE at this time.

>>5611898
Yeah, it is at least published by Sunsoft. I have a few games that are not listed in Wikipedia and I've found Wikipedia errors/misinformation a few times too regarding games or manga, so it can happen where you run into the small chance of incorrect information if you look hard enough.

>>5612971
I had only intended to use J-Win 98SE, therefore I thought the 120GB SSD could work. My only other spare HDDs I have are the hybrid drives from Seagate but in 1TB and 2TB which are a waste if all I can use is 120GBs, even moreso if I can have a page/swap file on a separate drive. Maybe, I am just searching fora better option in what drives I should save up for this J-Win 98SE build (I already got a couple of SATA to ATA IDE adapters). I just considered the XP dual boot idea from the above post as maybe a way if I can set a 1TB to have its first 120GB for 98, and the remainder to NTFS for 2k/XP in order to make use of wasted space.

Nihon falcom was a great company/dev. They had a small store and would even accept orders from the US with their rudimentary English. I was hooked from the start with screenshots of the Turbografx Ys Books 1&2. Their music was always top notch. Popful Mail was great. They gave out Lord Monarch for free on Windows. I took a chance on Zwei!! and was not disappointed. I really liked that they gave so much stuff with their games too. They cared quite a bit about their games.

Yeah, I am fortunate I kept a lot of my old stuff instead of selling them away. Working as a cook flipping burgers hardly gets the bills paid. I happen to raid the clearance bins in stores and I only have old games because, that's what was cheap. I don't have any modern systems because of the expense, so it is refreshing to join in with others where I can pretend like they were new.

Don't die thread. There's so much good information I need from here. It'll be a bit, but I am slowly getting closer and closer to building the J-win98SE machine and enjoying some sweet games.

>>4642226
Many at the food establishment I work at see the handwriting. If you can, please don't doxx me. I am already miserable enough flipping burgers there. Just be smug with the knowledge that your cook posts on 4chan and you have leverage such that I will not tamper your food.

>>4647981
I don't qualify for that. Getting a return is already a happy enough event for me. It got me those computer parts already, and I hope with next year's return I can get a case, the cables, power source, and hard disks to complete the J-Win98SE project. I also need to get a keyboard and mouse too, but maybe I can find an adapter to use the ones I got from my daily driver computer.

I wanted to get a 6800 AGP, since the drivers seem to allow that on 98. However the prices are really ridiculous, but the fx 5900 was not. Would a fx 5900 not have the features finally working the way they are meant to?

Some very interesting loose Mega Drive games but probably beyond my budget. However I am really looking at those sets of PC CD-ROMs on the right there, some Rockman Win95 games and some Touhou. Couldn't make out the prices.

I can't just choose one. I like them all for different reasons. The Ys series is just fun to me. I am very hyped to get the Steam release of 7 and 8.

I also remember paying $2 to get Ys on my old Motorola Razr flip phone, is there a way to extract that from the phone and an emulator on my computer to play it?

That SNES version was the very first Ys game I played because I so desperately wanted to play the TurboDuo ones based on all the sweet screenshots in EGM coverage. When I finally got the Duo, and play the Ys games it was bliss.

I too abused the spots where I can hold down a button and walk away. It was still fun enough for me. Playing through the PCE games made me a lifelong fan of the series. If I wasn't so poor, I'd get one of those new consoles to play the latest, as I am still hyped for it and jealous of those playing it right now:

I actually think the games are fun when they are a bit challenging.

Yeah, the "small box" versions are still around and everywhere. They may actually look nicer on shelf since they are more consistent in size. Although these days, there's just so many advantages of digital downloads of the games, so physical releases are just for old persons like I holding onto a nostalgic feeling.

I am in agreement that the PC-Engine/TurboGrafx-16 ones are the best place to start, primarily for soundtrack. They were my primary reason for wanting my TurboDuo. The newer releases on PC are also very good. I am pretty hyped for Ys 8, I kind of hoped the game ran at the hyper speed as the early teasers had it at.

Ys Books 1 & 2 for the TurboGrafx (and 4 for PC-Engine) primarily has you just bumping into enemies, no buttons needed ... also I think they are pretty good action RPGs

I really like the TurboGrafx version of books 1&2. They have IMO the best versions of the music yet to be topped. Also the goddesses Feena and Lair (Rhea) have more of a "loli" look to them on TG16.

The Ys series is one of my personal top 5 JRPG series/games. I still really wish the TG16 edition of 4 was the canon entry.

I got over selling my stuff, only poor experiences doing so, and thus I've turned into a hoarder. I do see the charm in all these big box games I do have, I am just more concerned my income is so poor that I'll be unable to maintain a space to store them, and I do understand they are practically worthless, and only meaningful to me, because they were mine. I cannot tell if my current area has too many big box collectors or none at all, local used bookstore chain has a few big box games in each location, but never anything notable.
