From 64 onward I'll agree, but in the 2D era they all looked great.
Bowser's face wasn't as lumpy, and he looked more like a turtle
Mario, Luigi, and Peach were shorter, they looked much cuter
Rare's DK design is complete fucking shit compared to EAD's used in DK '94 and G&WG

And Yoshi, man. Fucking Yoshi was great before his own series fucked him to death and never stopped.
Yoshi was great in Super Mario World. His big huggable design, his laid-back attitude, his simple friendly intelligence, his neat dinosaur sounds as his primary voice, his ability to own a house and speak English.

Then Yoshi's Island came out and ruined him up a bit. He's cutesy now, was made dramatically smaller, he's got creepy human arms frog hands, he's not intelligent, his island is re-imagined by a little kid, and his "egg" thing was brought back in a really strange and gross way. He's more of a pet now than a friend.

Yoshi's Story came out and took that a bit further. He's even cutesier, his island is even more dumbed down, his proportions are more fucked, his chin/skull are totally gone, just an ugly ball nose and big creepy eyes. And that fucking horrible voice. This would be for forgibable, since they're babies in that game, but all that shit stuck to adult Yoshi.

From a laid-back sentient dino friend steed to an ugly little babbling baby froggy animal who shits 500 eggs a day. I've never seen a video game character raped harder than Yoshi. Not even Sonic, Bomber Man, or Pac-Man.

Why did they change Yoshi so much?

His design in Island, is perfect. They streamlined the World design, which I consider a perfection of it, and later they added his stupid voice and flutter sounds.
