>Best: Silent Hill
Probably my favorite game of all time, it has a great story, and a perfect ratio of combat to puzzles. The soundtrack is great too, and the shoddy voice acting sort of fits the game. I still play this very often, as the replay value is very high because of multiple endings, secret items, fun weapons, and beautiful eerie surroundings filled with cultural references. The overall atmosphere is undisputed on the PS1.

>Worst: The Mummy
This game has haunted me since I first played the demo (which was on the first PS1 demo disc I ever owned). It basically represents how Silent Hill would be if it was shitty. The controls are pure piss, and you constantly die to mundane platforming challenges as you're constantly terrified of over- or undershooting jumps. Tapping the jump button once will launch your sorry ass 10 feet in the direction you're facing, often sending you straight into a pit of blood/lava/nothingness. Random traps will kill you by pulling the floor away from under your feet. Enemies spawn from literally nothing, usually after solving an embarrassingly easy puzzle, and they can and will attack you from behind.
My most hated part is when you're suddenly forced to ride a floating log/pillar, Silver Surfer style, with no proper introduction to the new game mechanics. The obstacles will only become visible right before you're supposed to dodge them, making it virtually impossible to avoid them all on your first playthrough, because of the slow reaction to your inputs. The hitboxes in this part are absolute bullshit, so expect to die a bunch of times before even figuring that out and dodging the first obstacle. The checkpoints are not placed at key points, so every time you die, there is a heap of re-spawned enemies and humdrum puzzles that you will need to repeat. Again. And again. And fucking again. This is crap in such a death-heavy game. Game Over means back to the start of the level.
The music is great though. graphics are okay

Silent Hill, of course.

Also Crash Bandicoot.
