I honestly think he's a very uninspired villain. He's basically just Bowser as an egg.

and look at any footage of Sonic 4 episode 1 boss fights to see the wings. I think some concept art also shows it. I think this detail was only in Sonic 1 though

I was thought Sonic was one hell of an annoying mascot, like so many others in the 90's.

The only reason I kept playing was to see what kind of crazy machine Dr. Eggman would come up with in the next stage. That guy is awesome.
