Best NES/Famicom game that's inspired by Zelda 2/Metroid is Cosmo Police - Galivan though. Environments may be more drab, but the game is tons of fun.

Cosmo Police - Gallivan. An action-adventure game on Famicom that mixes elements from Metroid and Zelda 2. Exploration is Metroid style, except restrained to a level system rather than one big interconnected world; while combat is similar to Zelda 2 with the experience/level system as well.

In other words, it's Symphony of the Night before its time, but really.

Little Ninja Bros is neat yeah, it's actually a sequel to Kung-Fu Heroes which doesn't have the RPG elements but has the same top down combat (and only that). The last level will kick your ass though it took me an entire afternoon to beat that last world alone.
There is also a sequel a third game on Famicom, Super Chinese 3, which is very much like 2 (Little Ninja Bros) except the combat is more like the Kunio series (River City Ransom), except more clunky and laggy sadly. Then there are more games on Super Famicom and maybe more.
