Well, Nintendo already tried to be edgy all the way back in SNES era, didn't work as it was direct opposite of what they actually were.
And yes, this trend was global, one great example is how WWF went from the neon spandex of the '80s to the dark and edgy attitude era.
As for missing it, I'm not the biggest fan of the edgy era, but what we have today instead of it is just unimpressive. There's no real "movement" today. These things often started with music back in the day, but the music itself just pretty much died and decayed after ~2010. No one even knows all these endless soundcloud rappers anymore, all of them feel like a meme more than anything else. Same with K-pop which just makes you want to say "are you even fucking serious". And the select few """rock""" bands play the safest cuck music possible. Even the fashion of this decade is just completely distorted and regurgitated version of the '90s as zoomers who were born past 2000 see it. There's pretty much nothing new in it other than faggy teens who see the '90s as nothing more but a fashion accessory.

Forget the box art. Nintendo's Play It Loud era advertisements were straight up bonkers.

i could see their logic, its just a common marketing tactic. like eg fast food companies try to present their fatass food as something healthy. they dont change the product but try to distance themselves from "fat" image only, see all the names like "family size" etc. or how Subway memed their subs as weight loss food, and so on. image is everything to them.
reminder that Nintendo also tried to be edgy in early 90s, see pic. they tried to pretend Kirby was brutal dude with 'tude. I really feel bad for the ad guy who had to do this one.

People have always worshipped golden ages of the past as part of their proud [whatever] heritage. Rich Europeans all used to send their kids to get "classical educations" which allowed them to read and communicate in Latin and maybe Greek. Lots of Europe considered themselves Roman for much longer than most people realise--Germany was still the Holy Roman Empire right up until the 1800s, and Catholicism in general is a major remnant of their hegemony.
It's a big part of how the idea of a "nation state" developed, and military theorists/leaders study Greek and Roman battle reports even today, so when your whole history is war it's natural to idealise that stuff.
