Most likely nostalgia, but I like the CD version. The remixes by T's Music, of Lords of Thunder fame, are quite memorable. The primary flaw to me was the colors which could be patched out with Pyron's color hack: https://youtu.be/hw4G_ofpEQc

I guess it is still okay if they are having fun. I don't mind carrying the group sometimes. I remember encouraging others to join in at the arcades. It was still a good time with strangers tackling Krang in Turtles or showing others to maximize their last quarter in the original Double Dragon by elbowing everyone. Sometimes just passing on a bit of game knowledge to others is a joy in itself, at least for me.

I remember back around '86 or so, my cousin told me about this amazing game with awesome graphics called Double Dragon. We encountered it first in a train station. It was one of my favorite arcade machines at the time, but I was disappointed with the NES release not being as faithful and lacking co-op, which I remembered the Master System version had. My preferred version is the one on Gameboy Advance, which was a lot more like the arcade version but with more moves and combos. You are not going to get an unbiased answer from me as I do love the series, just as much as both Final Fight and SOR; I guess they are all liked equally to me, as they each have something special they offer me.

I can still hear the deep bass sounds from the Final Fight cabinet running through its attract mode. Haggar yelling doing the spinning clothesline. The guns firing in Afterburner with "FIRE". Passing the checkpoints in V.R.Racing. People being amazed at the combos in MVC2. Hadouken and Sonic Booms thrown. SkeeBall in the far background. Thugs dying and the thumb pointing to go forward in Double Dragon. The reversed sound into "X-Men" of the 6-player cab. People stomping to a beat in DDR. The recoil of the plastic guns on the Time Crisis 2 cabinets "ACTION".

I favor the SegaCD/MegaCD version for the music by T's Music. The added dialog intermissions of the GBA verion interrupt the game in my opinion. While it is nice to play using the Street Fighter Alpha sprites for Cody and Guy, it is still a bit jarring not matching the art design of the rest of the game, looking like a MUGEN piecemeal kind of game to me. I'm just so fond of the deep bass sound just overpowering the other noises in an arcade from Final Fight, which the GBA cannot reproduce.

My cousin would tell me about this awesome new arcade game. It was at the bus/train station. The Nintendo machines like Mario Bros., arcade Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, and Goonies were on the left, pinball machines in the back and right, up front was a sit down Pole Position and my 2nd favorite Yie-Ar Kung Fu, but in the middle of the floor was Double Dragon. The graphics were miles ahead of everything else at that arcade with its large sprites and large color palette enough to have some shading. The sound, music, and voices made it more real to me. Co-op play with my cousin and other strangers was a blast, I visted that bus/train station a lot on my own afterwards to play the game and Yie-Ar Kung-fu. The game set a high standard for me at the time, and every computer and gaming system had to have the game to be legit, just like how Street Fighter 2 later became, or Madden at the turn of the century.

My favorite version is the Advance version followed by the original arcade. I was a bit disappointed the NES version was not like the arcade, after getting the game. Its versus mode was what I thought the sprites should have been in-game, but I guess with the technical limitations of the NES that was the best it could do. Later, the same cousin who introduced me to the arcade game brought me over to his friends' place who had the Master System version, and I was amazed how much closer it was to my beloved arcade version.

So jealous. I was a NES home, but I wished I had that Double Dragon.

I am in agreement. Advance is pretty much the arcade version I loved but with more everything. More stages, more weapons, more moves, more enemy variety, but all still balanced for a great experience through.

Even though I played Renegade first, it was the original Double Dragon in the arcades which got me into the brawler genre. My cousin told me about this arcade game with great graphics and co-op play. I'd goto the bus station and was amazed t its visuals. Was also amused that we could attack one another. I had to get it for the NES I had at home but was disappointed. The sequel was the opposite, I was disappointed that the arcade was just a reskin of the original, and not a new game, but the NES version was amazing. I dropped the arcade 3 immediately as it had microtransactions and pay-to-win mechanics, but I actually liked the NES 3 as well. I really liked the SNES 4 graphics, and loved being able to guard/grab limbs of enemies for repeated attacks, but it was a bit too slow paced. However, my favorite is Double Dragon Advance, as it is the arcade 1 but with lots of extra moves/combos and a variety of enemies/pickups. The arcade original was one of my first 1ccs as I did abuse the hell out of the elbow attack.

I most prefer the MegaCD version with Pyron's Color hack for home ports:

You can not go wrong just using MAME, CPS Changer, X68000, or the actual CPS1 arcade, as that's pretty much how I remember them in many of my memories in arcades and movie theaters. The 360's XBLA release emulates it well with pretty good netcode and bundles it with Magic Sword; I think the fault with the PSN version is that both players have to buy the game to play alongside one another.

I would say River City Ransom. It has 2 player simultaneous play, and features the joy of picking everything up then throwing it at someone, including the other player.

I guess standards are raised, but I enjoyed my shallow run through many brawlers. I don't require them to be mechanically complex. It was also a fun joy to be playing a game and others inserting their credits to join in on the simplistic fun. Being next to family, friends, and even those strangers enjoying the same game together is enough to carry me through. I guess I am just easy to please in terms of videogames: good music, the amusement of seeing what's next, even just hitting a button for shit to happen is amusing enough for me.
