Lara's ponytail is tied up in the first game because they couldn't get it to animate correctly.

They also couldn't quite get the seam where her torso meets her pelvis to work right, which is why she has such a large belt buckle.

Its kinda funny sometimes how old videogame features or characters could have features that seem normal but were actually implemented due to technical issues.
