>Developers have always sought to have the best possible presentation.
But mostly as a way of enhancing the underlying gameplay. When some companies tried to take a shortcut and sell games that were all presentation and no gamepay (FMV "interactive movies"), they were laughed out of town.

The old arcade-derived attitude was "Hey kid. Look at this big gorgeous mountain reaching up into the sky. Now go climb it. Give me a quarter and you can go as far as you can."

The new attitude is "Hey kid. See this nice shiny car? Why don't we take a nice relaxing ride? All your friends are already sitting in the backseat to talk with. It's only $60 for the first 10 miles, and then $3.99 for the 2-mile scenic route DLC. Or you could buy a pack of special Road Coins which....."
