In order for the front-loading mechanism to work. Nintendo redesigned the NES to look like a VCR in order to sell it to after the video game crash.
The front-loading is also the reason for the contact problems of the NES.

The original Famicom, being a top-loader, doesn't suffer from this. Famicom modules are also a lot more compact.
