Ranking them from worst to best:

>7th gen
The downfall of SEGA allowed Western devs to gain a foothold in the console/mainstream industry and with them came the thinkpiece/Kotaku/Polygon cottage industry. The size of the industry lead to a lot of cheap money-making schemes, like achievements and day-one DLC. Lots of shoddy multi-plat games. Brown and bloom everywhere. Age of the military FPS. $499. Nintendo kept the faith by not focusing on graphics and using unorthodox hardware. Regardless, this was "the end of the golden age."

>6th gen
Console makers had enough money to throw into niche projects. Variety and sheer amount of games being made exploded. On the other hand, increased graphical fidelity lead to the age of the cutscene, the loading screen, and the 70-hour JRPG. At least 3D movement and action were perfected, and single-player games flourished. Last of the golden age. Best gen for 3D action and single-player games, and for being a kid arguably.

>4th gen
Game writers were beginning to figure out their craft, sprites and MIDI music were mastered. Golden age of arcades worldwide. The PC market was really taking off as well. Golden age was approaching its peak. Best gen for JRPGs.

>3rd gen
Games for home systems were still being made under the arcade mindset, so they were very hard to compensate for short campaigns. Localizations were bad or nonexistent, but it almost never mattered. Tons of genres were under or un-represented due to tech limitations. 2D action was perfected though. Beginning of the golden age. Best gen for 2D platformers, side-scrollers, shooters, puzzlers.

>5th gen
Everyone was too busy paying attention to 3D graphix on consoles to notice what was going on with arcades and PCs, whose games reached untold levels of depth and/or mechanical refinement. Golden age of CRPGs, PC adventures, PC strategy, FPS games, fighting games, beat-em-ups, gun games, racing games, sports games, and many others. Golden age of video games as a whole.

I love both those two games, but the overworlds feel crowded and too utilitarian. Cramming as much shit as you can in your available space has the obvious benefit of getting more content in there, but the world feels less like a real world because of it. Game worlds need "breathing" space.
