Their design is much smaller, more compact, and the buttons are easier to reach, it's definitely slightly closer in terms of reach to other controllers with a more traditional face buttons layout.

I know what you're talking about with the thumb resting on 2 buttons, i like resting mine on A/X, so on the M30 i rest it on B/Y and it feels just as comfy.
