Yup, it was an overcorrection to adapt to Sega's confrontational advertising. Nintendo was looking for an avenue to match and settled on Ren and Stimpy with a hint of Nickelodeon's slime focused stuff like Double Dare. Kirby and Mario made it through based on brand recognition but it hurt Earthbound a lot. The whole Play It Loud era was like a 90s time capsule where Nintendo took a hard turn toward the gross.

Maybe but they kept doubling down. Everything was gross and bizarre.

Shit, they aired the Chrono Trigger commercial just straight up in Japanese with nonsense subtitles. It was a weird time.
