The stock Dreamcast controller was so bad that it was necessary for the third party controllers to be used to play games.

It suits my hands better. Everyone may have different preferences, but it is what works best for me in Capcom games, Guardian Heroes, Radiant Silvergun, etc. Even when emulating, the four rightmost buttons work for the expected diamond layout for me too. My muscle memory for using such controllers for specific games suits the 6face button style, since it has a sort of history with me. I do suppose hitting X+Y+Z or A+B+C is more challenging on the 6face style, but that's what the L/R macros are for, opposed to X+Y+R1 or A+B+R2 for the 4face/4shoudler. Conversely, I need more immediate access to the heavy attacks than the shoulder buttons can provide for me.

It was almost like a Sega Saturn controller for the Dreamcast. The looser D-pad was great to do Street Fighter 3 blocks/parries. It also has similar sized XYZ to ABC buttons which was a weakness of Sega Saturn pads.

I can't imagine playing 2nd Impact and 3rd Strike without their controllers.

Not OP, but PS2 controllers can work on the original Playstation.

No, as you can see, these are on a different surface.

I prefer it for playing the Street Fighter 3 games. I feel its d-pad is better suited to do blocks/parries over a standard Sega Saturn pad. Another thing it does better than a standard Saturn controller is having equal sized XYZ buttons that matches the ABC buttons. It's biggest negative I have found are the lack of replacement contact silicone pads which will be needed after overuse. I have heard the rumble motor could die, but have not experienced that.

They work best for me. I like the feel of the Saturn D-pads and face button layout. The only negative is that I wished the XYZ buttons were the same size as the ABC buttons. You have to find what works best for you, and the Sega Saturn pads are great for me, such that my execution in fighting games is at a place where I like it only using the pad.

They come from a different dimension. The additional select button does make them more useful in emulation.

Thanks, those Retrobit ones are still in my Amazon wishlist. The clear blue plastic looks great. I read they have a revision which is better, but it doesn't seem well documented on what's the good one they released.

I prefer that d-pad for block/parries in Street Fighter 3 over using a Sega Saturn pad. It could just be muscle memory familiarity, but I think the lighter d-pad of the Ascii pad is better for those quick directional inputs over my preferred Saturn pad. I also like it for the similarly sized XYZ buttons over the smaller XYZ buttons on the Saturn pad as well. For most fighting games I'd rather use the Saturn pad, but for the Street Fighter 3 games, I prefer the Ascii pad.

There are. Nubytech, PDP, and Hori made some that also had similar sized XYZ buttons, It is just the unfortuate part that the rubber membrane may not hold up on the Ascii pads, but if they do hold up, they are better for SF3 blocks/parries than standard Saturn pads.

That one came with Puyo Puyo Fever. However, I could only think of the Dreamcast which had an orange-white color scheme. What other pad had that color combination?

This. The Dreamcast controller is the worst stock controller outside of those for the 5200 and CDi. The Dreamcast had such bad stock controllers that I had to get other controllers to make games play right. Spent almost as much on arcade sticks, light guns, keayboard+mouse, dance mats, maracas, twin sticks as the games, just to get them playable on the system. I haven't played any fishing games, but even those have their own controllers for the system. Dreamcast owners were fortunate that driving games even function with the stock DC pad, because there are no good steering wheels for the system.

I only got it because at that time I didn't realize it had a timed console exclusivity. It also featured at that time so many extras modes and characters the arcade did not have. Later, once its timed exclusivity was up, I had a choice between the Saturn and Dreamcast version, while the DC was newer, I just had such a fun time with the Saturn through its lifetime that I opted to get that version. However, the DC and PS version does have a Pocketstation/VMU game mode the Saturn version does not have. Also the Dreamcast version has more dramatic battle options, including up to 3 players which was so fun among my circle of friends. However, the Saturn version did feature pixel art hit sparks which neither the Dreamcast nor Playstation version features. I guess the main reason to get the PS1 port now is to show off how impressive that the Playstation can actually handle a port of the game, even though Guilty Gear and Advanced V.G.2 did it better with the hardware. I'd actually wished I didn't spend my money on the PS version had I known and bought something like the Saturn version of Symphony of the Night instead in retrospect, but now that I have the PS version of Z3, it's not like I can sell it away and get something better. Granted the $7 is practically an hour's worth of pre-tax work, I guess I just keep it around for the cool boxart.

For pads, I like the Ascii Pad FT on the Dreamcast. However, for my tastes in control pads, I just use a Saturn or PS1/2 adapter to Dreamcast so I can use a Sega Saturn controller.

The problem with them are that they lack an analog stick for Dreamcast games. They are more like the Dreamcast arcade sticks which ditches the analog and changes the L&R to Z&C buttons. The D-pad is a little more loose and light in theory for fighting games but I kind of prefer the slight tilt a real Sega Saturn controller's D-pad performs slightly more. I will say the lighter and looser D-pad of the Ascii Pad FT is better suited for parries/blocks in the Street Fighter 3 games than the Saturn pads.

They do have the equal sized ABC & XYZ buttons that I crave. However, they do lack shoulder buttons.

I would say NeoGeo would be best for fighting games in general, however, the Dreamcast does have a solid lineup as well.

Some games may not be 100% accurate to the arcade, but they are pretty close ports (MvC1, Garou: MotW, and SF3:3S-FftF). It does have a great lineup of SNK games from KOF98-2002, Last Blade 2, and Garou. Capcom supported the system with Power Stone 1&2, Capcom Vs. SNK 1&2, Kikaioh, Project Justice, Vampire Chronicles, Street Fighter 3 W Impact (get Giant Attack and 2nd Impact), Super Street Fighter 2X for Matching Service, Street Fighter Zero 3 and Jojo's Bizarre Adventures. Dead or Alive 2 and Soul Calibur are fun and show off the Dreamcast's 3D capabilities. Arc System Works released Guilty Gear X on the Dreamcast too. While nowhere near as many fighting games as the Playstation, I don't think you will be upset with what the Dreamcast offers for fighting games.

I actually think the D-pad on the Ascii Pad Ft is too loose to my liking compared to a Saturn's D-pad. However, I like that the XYZ buttons are the same size as the ABC buttons. I also dislike the back of the pad having sharp edges meant for people to squeeze, but that lip is too small to squeeze (unless you have infant sized hands) so in the end it can irritate index and middle fingers if you try to hold it in a relaxing manner (fixed by the time they released it for PS2).
